Week 5 Discussion Question 3

“To truly become Christians we must also repent of the reasons we ever did anything right. Pharisees only repent of their sins, but Christians repent of the very roots of their righteousness too.” (p. 78)

How is this explanation different from the way most people understand repentance? How does this change the way you repent?

Our group responded to this question by observing that we need to examine our motives for doing what we do. Are we doing what we believe is right to earn a reward from God? Do we have an attitude of entitlement? We need to repent of this motivation and attitude? Ought we replace our sense of entitlement with gratitude for what God does for us?

Our group reflected that we need to ask ourselves some questions, such as:
"Why do I do what is right?"
"How does what I do and my motivations for and attitudes about what I do impact my relationship with God?"
"Would I be doing this is nobody was watching?"
"Is what I am doing actually right?" "Why?" "Is it just my perception of what is "right"?
