Week 2 Discussion Question 4

Can you think of other incidents from Jesus' life where he comes into conflict with the Pharisees and the teachers of the law? Why do you think they were opposed to Jesus and his teaching?

  2. The religious authorities publicly and directly question Jesus and his teaching:

    Luke 20:1-8 His authority.

    Luke 20:20-27 Paying taxes to Cesar.

    Luke 20:27-38 The marriage relationship at the resurrection

    Matthew 15:1-12 Washing hands.

    Matthew 19:3-9 They questioned him about divorce.

    John 10:22-32 His identity.

    Luke 19:45-48 Jesus said, "My house will be a temple of prayer, but you have made it a 'den of robbers'.

    These clashes between Jesus and the Pharisees highlight the irreconcilable differences between gospel Christianity and the religious mentality.
