  1. Here are some of our comments from the class:

How do irreligious lifestyles lead to spiritual emptiness?

There is a perception of others being bad - we tend to point the finger at others.

But what about ourselves? The picture looks different when we look at irreligious aspects of our own lives.

The irreligious are also seen as nice people, but church isn't their thing.

People like the S. Carolina governor, who had everything, but went astray in his lifestyle by having an affair.

The attitude the my responsibility is only to my own family.

The irreligious try to control things, but this doesn't work.

How do religious lifestyles lead to spiritual emptiness?

Although religious people are often spiritually grounded, having access to a spiritual life, there are times people lose their connection with God such as:

    - in a crisis or tragic situation when people ask "Why me?" or "Why does God allow this to happen?"

    - when we try to control God by our prayers and our prayers are not answered. This can lead to doubt.

    - when people have doubt about the truth of the Bible, and ask questions such as "Are the stories in the Bible only stories and not facts?", "How do we know that Bible stories are true?", or "Did Jesus actually tell these stories?"

    - when people forget they were created to worship God, and become self-centered.

    - when people equate their religion with the church community, and the community lets them down, such as someone who is ostracized when s/he doesn't meet the group's moral standards.
